To break 90 meters was a big motivation
Javelin throw is always one of the main attractions at the meeting directed by the world record holder Jan Železný. After the amazing silver medal in Tokyo, Czech Jakub Vadlejch feels potential to attack the podium on every major championship, but in Ostrava he has to pass through strong opposition of the reigning world champion Anderson Peters. 24-year-old thrower from Grenada won first Diamond League event of the year in Doha with fantastic personal best, National record and world lead mark of 93.07m.
JAKUB VADLEJCH
On being the leader of the Czech stars at the meeting
I am glad I belong to the elite group of the 22 athletes who were able to throw over 90m. It was like the dream come true. In the first competition it is really a great result. I would like to show my abilities to the home crowd and to create a great atmosphere with the other opponents.
On his next starts and plans
This is the first time when we have the world and European champs in one year and it is getting closer very fast. I have scheduled 4 other competitions before that and the Czech championships. I think it is well planned and we will still have time for some training before that. I think I had the best preparation and the training of my life and the main targets is definitely the world and European championships.
About the plan to win the Diamond League
I managed to win it already twice and it was an unforgettable feeling. I think it was one of my main accomplishments of my career.
On 90m throw and further motivation
I think it was a lucky Friday the 13th. I have dreamed about such distance for all my life. It was like a small inner victory for me. But, with the role model of my coach Jan Zelezny, it is not the distance I would be satisfied with. I am not saying I quit with athletics. I had some throws there which could have been even further. I am motivated still enough I think.
ANDERSON PETERS
On strong javelin legacy in Czech Republic
This is the country where the javelin throw is very famous and usually very strong. You have guys who manage to throw over 90m at any time. Being in such a competitive field of javelin throwers is really good for me. All athletes are in good shape and I know that Jakub (Vadlejch) plans to put on good shoes as well. It looks like we have at least four throwers who could get over 90m again.
On his plans for current season
The main goal for me this year is, obviously, to try to defend my World Championships title and to win the Commonwealth Games. Hopefully, I can also be the Diamond League champion at the DL final in Zurich.
On becoming more known and famous in his country
Certainly, I became a more recognisable person. My javelin results and achievements give me some popularity in my country but it isn’t as secure as James (Kirani) has.
On his unique national record and world leading mark (93.07m) at the Doha Diamond League
The Doha Diamond League was a pretty unique event. Everything was perfect, including wind conditions. When I saw that Jakob (Vadlejch) put an extra effort and went over 90m, I thought maybe I also should try to pass the mark he did. Yes, he was the person who did motivate me to overcome 90 for the first time in my career.
On having motivation from the crowd
Having an impact stadium does a lot for athletes. It’s a big deal especially for throwers that generally rush the event. So, seeing the full stadium is always a big advantage.
