In the year of celebrating the centenary of the founding of Vítkovice athletics, the top athletics event in the Czech Republic promises a unique chance to see the best athletes in full force before the Paris Olympics and also the European Championships in Rome. Less than two weeks before the meeting, more foreign stars were announced.
A duel between three of the best javelin throwers on the planet
Just as they ranked in the first three places at the Diamond League in Doha, they will appear again at the Ostrava Golden Spike. The winner from Qatar, Jakub Vadlejch, will be looking to defeat Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra from India again on home soil. Third in the party will be the 2019 and 2022 world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada. The Indian megastar (the most watched athlete on social networks) will have his premiere in Ostrava.
Olympic winners at the start of 100 metres
The men's 100 will have both individual Olympic winners from Tokyo on start. Andre de Grasse from Canada (9.89) will join the 100m runner and the already announced Marcell Jacobs from Italy. American Trayvon Brommel (9.76), Jamaican Ryiem Forde (9.95) and British Reece Prescod (9.93 at Tretra 2022, his personal record) complete the quality of the hundred.
World number one in women's pole vault Molly Caudery at the start in Ostrava
The women's pole vault will also attract spectators in the traditional sector. British Molly Caudery, currently the best in the world, world indoor championships winner, who improved to 486, will come to Ostrava. She also won the first Diamond League in Doha (473). Czech record holder Amálie Švabiková will also have other interesting rivals. The experienced and traditional participant Tina Šutej from Slovenia (Ostrava Golden Spike 2023 winner) and the legendary 2016 Olympic winner Katerini Stefanidi from Greece.
Already announced - Mondo and co
Pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis, high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi and sprinter Marcell Jacobs have already been announced as mega stars. In the first wave of top names, the return of a hundred women was announced too. The new indoor record holder, home Karolína Maňasová, will face one of the world's fastest sprinters, Ewa Swoboda from Poland. Olympic 400m champion Steven Gardiner from the Bahamas, who triumphed at the Diamond League in Doha and confirmed his great form this year, was
announced as the first foreign sprint star at the Golden Spike. In the women's javelin, the world's best javelin thrower Haruka Kitaguchi, winner of the World Championship and the Diamond League, will be presented, she is being prepared by Domažlice by coach David Sekerák.
Programme for spectators - afternoon with family and friends
Spectators can enjoy this year's extremely busy edition of the Ostrava Golden Spike from 1:00 p.m., when the international Para Golden Spike competition starts. The national programme and the Chocolate Spike finals follow. From 13:00 to 17:30 there will be entertainment in the sports fan zone with athletics, taekwondo, rugby, korfball and other sports, autograph signings, great, varied and quality food and drink from local resources, and the opportunity to buy a souvenir from designers and manufacturers from the region.
At 17:45, the stars of world athletics will be looking forward to all the spectators in the stands, where they will experience an amazing two hours of a packed main programme and cheering. Anyone who gets hungry will get refreshments right in the stands, so there will be no need to leave the seat and no single second of the great spectacle will be missed.
