Olympic Champion Grant Holloway to Compete at Ostrava Golden Spike
Ostrava, June 6, 2025 – The 64th edition of the Golden Spike Ostrava will welcome another global track and field superstar. Athletics fans can look forward to seeing Olympic champion and three-time world champion in the 110m hurdles, Grant Holloway, who will make his debut appearance in Ostrava. Not only is Holloway one of the fastest hurdlers in history, but he also claimed the Olympic title at the Paris 2024 Games. His personal best of 12.81 seconds ranks him second on the all-time list, reviving memories of Dayron Robles’s world record 12.87 set at the Golden Spike in 2008. Holloway will arrive in Ostrava following his appearance at the Paris Diamond League, which is his next scheduled meet.
“I’m really looking forward to my first race in Ostrava. I know the meeting has a rich tradition in sprint hurdles, especially with the world record from 2008. I’ve also heard the fans are fantastic, so I believe we’ll have a great time together. I can’t wait,” said Holloway, who has remained unbeaten indoors in the 60m hurdles for 11 years and claimed the world indoor title again this March in China.
Unfortunately, Jakob Ingebrigtsen will not be able to start his summer season. Due to an Achilles injury, he is forced to miss upcoming athletics meetings, including his home meet, Oslo Bislett Games, and the Golden Spike Ostrava. His return to competition is not yet known. “Dear fans in Ostrava, unfortunately I won’t be able to fulfill my commitment and compete at the Golden Spike this year. As you know, I recently suffered a minor injury and haven’t been able to train properly in recent weeks. My condition is improving, but I need to postpone my return to racing and will be back on the track later this year. I’m sure the meeting will still be great, and if possible, I’d love to come next year,” Ingebrigtsen sent his regrets to Ostrava.
Making her Ostrava Golden Spike debut will be Germany’s Alica Schmidt, one of the most followed athletes today. She has medaled in the 4x400m relay at European U20 and U23 Championships and also competes individually from 200m up to 800m. She will run the 800m in Ostrava on June 24.
In the shot put, home favorite and European Indoor medalist Tomáš Staněk will face a strong Italian duo: Leonardo Fabbri, 2024 European Champion and 2024 Golden Spike winner (22.40m), and Zane Weir, 2023 European Indoor Champion and current European leader (21.84m).
The Golden Spike has also surpassed a major milestone with over 12,000 tickets sold!
The regional rounds of the traditional Chocolate Spike competition for young athletes are also reaching their final stages, culminating in a grand finale at the Golden Spike stadium. Over 4,500 children have participated so far, with the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a world-class meet and meet their sporting idols.
This year’s Golden Spike Ostrava will take place on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. The accompanying programme, including the fan zone, autograph sessions, and children’s activities, begins at 14:30. The fan zone closes at 18:00, when the main programme starts.
